Match Report
A tough result at Links Park sees us miss the chance to secure our first away win of the season.
The first half proved to be a major test for us, going a goal down within 8 minutes leaving us with a mountain to climb for the remainder of the half.
We almost opened the scoring in the 7th minute when a corner taken quickly allowed Alston to tap the ball back to Taylor who swung a cross in, finding the head of Wedderburn. Unfortunately, his header glanced wide.
Montrose took advantage of our loose play in the middle of the park just a minute later when MacIver- Redwood’s ball through found Hester who slotted the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0.
Montrose looked to be on the prowl again 10 minutes later when Quinn’s ball over the top found Hester once again, this time he dragged his shot inches wide.
The home advantage allowed Montrose to double their lead in the 29th minute after Williamson burst into the box and onto the ball, after a blocked shot, to fire home their second goal. 2-0.
A change of formation in the second half gave us a new lease of life as we lifted the tempo to cause a few Montrose problems in the opening 20 minutes.
Just 2 minutes after the restart, Anderson’s throw in found Wedderburn in the box. He tapped the ball frustratingly wide.
A scramble in the Montrose box, with multiple blocked shots looked to surely end in a goal, but we, unfortunately, couldn’t catch the break of the ball.
In the 51st minute, Alston’s lay off to Aitken afforded him space to turn and shoot but his tame effort was an easy save for Montrose keeper Gill.
Just a few minutes later, Hester left fans wondering how he had failed to score. The 60th minute saw Hester clean through on goal, however, he somehow put the ball wide of the post.
Our closest chance to scoring came through full back Bilham in the 61st minute, who came steaming into the box getting on the end of Meechan’s deep cross, however he watched his header fly over the bar.
A series of corners and free kicks for both teams came over the next 20 minutes with neither team being able to capitalise on their chances.
The final goal for the home side came in the 91st minute when a corner swung in by Webster found Quinn unmarked at the front post to make it three. 3-0.
After a disappointing result in Montrose, we must now remain focused on next weekend when we face Queen of the South. Please make sure you come and support Gary and the boys!
