Stenhousemuir Women 0-7 Montrose Women
Women’s Scottish Cup Round 3
Ochilview Park
07.01.24
Stenhousemuir’s Scottish Cup campaign comes to an end as they bow out in the third round to Montrose.
It was always going to be an uphill task frosty afternoon at Ochilview Park as Stenhousemuir
welcomed SWPL side Montrose in the third round of the Women’s Scottish Cup.
And the first half proved how difficult this was going to be.
It was a professional display from Montrose as they controlled the half and didn’t let the Warriors have a sniff and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead as Georgia Carter slipped the ball into the back of the net from a corner scramble just after the ten-minute mark.
After this, it was nothing but relentless pressure from the away side, but it took them some time to add to the scoreboard.
It was a new look in the Stenhousemuir net as Rosie Alexander made her debut and she did brilliantly to deny Louise Brown after she found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Despite the pressure, the Warriors were holding on strong until Lousie Brown found herself in some space on the right and drove towards goal before slotting in Montrose’s second.
Two minutes before the break, the away side added another as Demi Taylor rattled the ball passed the debutant goalkeeper from distance.
The second half commenced, and it was more of the same.
Montrose came out with the same relentless press which led to Louise Brown adding her second goal of the game as she tapped the ball into an empty net from a drilled cross from the left.
Stenhousemuir then had their first real opportunity of the game. Eva Ralston’s shot forced the Montrose goalkeeper to palm the ball out for a corner to which Rachel Vickerman narrowly headed over the bar.
Unfortunately, that was as close as it came for the home team this afternoon.
Both sides introduced some fresh legs to the mixture which evened out the game for the next quarter of an hour, but the quality of this Montrose squad overpowered the tiring warriors.
Substitute Aimee Ridgeway added Montrose’s fifth goal of the afternoon and five minutes later, Louise Brown completed her hat-trick and the SWPL side’s sixth.
With just over five minutes left to play Alma Codegoni rippled the back of the net shortly after coming onto the field to make it seven.
A disappointing start to the year for Stenhousemuir but the Warriors still have plenty to play for the rest of this campaign.
